Tea tree oil is a natural plant extract from the native Australian Melaleuca alternifolia plant. It can be extracted when the leaves from the plant are distilled with steam in order to obtain the oil. A highly versatile oil, tea tree essential oil or Melaleuca oil is known to treat a lot of different ailments. Traditional and more recent tea tree oil uses and benefits include: treats nail fungus, Athlete's foot and ringworm, heals skin infections such as eczema and psoriasis, clears up sinus infections, kills mold, etc. The antimicrobial and antifungal properties of this oil has attributed to wide applications for maintaining oral hygiene, feminine and overall hygiene [1],[2], [3], [4]. Tea tree oil has proven to be highly efficient in treating skin conditions like psoriasis and scabies [5], [6]. Its healing characteristics are mainly due to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant terpenes present in its composition [7], [8]. These terpenes have also exhibited anticancer effect in two individual studies conducted on colorectal cancer [9] and breast cancer [10].
